60-Second Quote Checklist

10 questions to ask any removal company before you book. Takes less than a minute to run through — and could save you hundreds on moving day.

1
Is the quote written and itemised?

A verbal quote is worthless on moving day. If your remover won’t put it in writing with a clear item list, walk away.

Red flag: "We’ll sort the price on the day."

2
Does the price include VAT?

Some companies quote ex-VAT to look cheaper, then add 20% on the invoice. Always ask: is this the total I’ll pay?

Red flag: A price that seems too good to be true.

3
What happens if the job takes longer than expected?

Ask whether you’ll be charged extra per hour or per half hour, and what the rate is. Get it in writing.

Red flag: No clear answer about overtime charges.

4
What’s included in the base price?

Does the quote cover disassembly, wrapping, packing materials, and stair carries? These are common add-on charges.

Red flag: £X per flight of stairs, charged on the day.

5
Is parking and access included in the plan?

If the van can’t park outside your door, the extra carry time will cost you. Ask who’s responsible for parking suspensions.

Red flag: "That’s your problem" when asked about parking.

6
Are they insured — and what does the policy cover?

Goods in transit insurance and public liability are the minimum. Ask for the policy reference, not just "yes, we’re insured".

Red flag: Can’t name their insurer or show a certificate.

7
What payment methods do they accept?

Cash-only operators are harder to hold accountable. A company using secure online payments gives you a paper trail.

Red flag: Cash only, no receipt offered.

8
Do they have a cancellation or rescheduling policy?

Life happens. Know the terms before you commit — some companies charge 100% for cancellations within 48 hours.

Red flag: No written cancellation terms.

9
Will the same team do the job, or is it subcontracted?

Some brokers take the booking and pass the job to whoever is cheapest that day. Ask directly: is this your own team?

Red flag: "We’ll confirm the crew closer to the date."

10
Can you see reviews from real, named customers?

Generic 5-star reviews with no detail are easy to fake. Look for reviews that mention specific addresses, dates, or items moved.

Red flag: All reviews are anonymous or on the company’s own website only.
